With an average annual growth of 7 percent of its GDP, Argentina is one of the most attractive and most quickly growing markets in Latin America. This leads to a significant increase in energy demand, which proves to be a major challenge for the country. The national government is focusing on two aspects: Reducing the dominance of fossil fuels (which currently account for over 60 percent of the country’s energy mix), and secondly, to mitigate the negative impacts of conventional energy on the environment.

There have been some major changes in the recent past: A new law rules that large companies need to obtain at least 8 percent of the consumed electricity from renewable energy. The government has set the ambitious goal to increase the percentage of renewable energy to 20 percent.

Argentina is one of the five countries with the greatest wind power potential in the world. The most favorable regions like Patagonia are characterized by strong and permanent winds: 80 percent of the year the wind blow with speeds of 10 meters per second.
